F1 fans recently reacted to FIA removing a point awarded for the fastest lap in a Grand Prix from the 2025 season. This decision was made at the World Motor Sport Council meeting a few days ago.
In an F1 race, a driver who has clocked the fastest lap out of all other drivers in a race gets one extra point for being quick despite running in race trim. This feature in a Grand Prix has given several interesting results in the race and title battles.
However, the FIA recently held a World Motor Sport Council meeting where they not only discussed the 2026 F1 rules but also made some minor changes for 2025, including the removal of one point for the fastest lap.
Many F1 fans were unimpressed with the decision to remove the points awarded for the fastest lap in a race. Some quickly mentioned Daniel Ricciardo's fastest lap of the race at Singapore which he essentially stole from the McLaren camp to help Red Bull one last time before being removed. Followers discussed whether the point removal was because of Ricciardo's tactic in Marina Bay.
"Thats f**king stupid man.. why not? They really got rid of it cuz Toro Rosso wanted to give Ricciardo a farewell gift," one fan wrote.
"It was cool when a leader pitted to try and get it. Not so cool when a child team did it for the daddy team. Shouldn't it go only to drivers/teams already scoring points in the race? To keep out the riff-raff?" one suggested.
Some also expressed how they liked a driver putting on a set of soft tires at the end of the race and clocking a blistering lap.
"Ngl kind of an L. Always love seeing someone come in right at the end and slap on a set of softs and just send it," one follower expressed.
"This was one exciting aspect for teams outside the top 4 or 5 and now they've removed this as well!" another added.
"I liked it tbf. Not sure why they wouldn’t keep it," someone wondered.
Lando Norris gives his take on FIA removing the point for fastest lap in an F1 Grand Prix
Lando Norris recently opined on FIA removing a point from the fastest lap of the race. Speaking in the press conference before the 2024 F1 US GP, the McLaren driver opined that he liked the opportunity to get a point for the fastest lap.
The McLaren driver explained how it gave the drivers and teams an extra optional challenge during the race, which had high risks but a decent reward. He added that a driver's pitstop could go wrong, drastically increasing the risk factor of the fastest lap.
"I have no idea. I don't know why they've done it. I kind of liked how it is now. I mean, you know, there's an opportunity to go for something else. Sometimes you pay the price for risking such a thing, and it's always been a risk in certain scenarios. if your pit stop goes wrong, you know, different reasons," Norris said.
Apart from removing a point from the fastest lap, the FIA has also announced changes in recruiting young drivers for F1 practice sessions. They have increased the requirement to pick up young drivers during these sessions. Details of it have not been shared publicly by the governing body.
