F1 pundit Craig Slater recently talked about how Aston Martin managed to hire Adrian Newey and how the team's rivals would regret not signing the aero wizard. Newey will soon start working for the British team after finishing his supercar project at Red Bull.
In September 2024, Aston Martin announced that they had successfully signed Adrian Newey for the 2025 season. This was massive news in the F1 space since the aerodynamicist was a long-time Red Bull senior and helped the team win their world championships.
Speaking about Newey's arrival at Aston Martin, Craig Slater said that the team's CEO, Lawrence Stroll, did not waste any time in hiring the 65-year-old aerodynamicist. He added that though many influential seniors in other teams could have lured Newey, they did not want to fight a financial battle with rivals for him.
The F1 pundit felt that there must be some teams that would regret the decision of not fighting Aston Martin for Adrian Newey.
“Lawrence Stroll has speculated to accumulate," Slater said."Why did Aston Martin get Newey ahead of the others, who might have done? A lot of the influential people at the other teams who were tipped to get Newey said ‘we don’t want to be drawn into a bidding war for his services’." (via PlanetF1)
He also believed that the Silverstone-based team would climb the pecking order in the coming years.
“I sense today that a lot are regretting that they didn’t splash more cash, and force the issue. It feels like, at this time, the inevitable result [for Aston Martin] is winning at some stage,” he added.
Before Aston Martin's official announcement, rumors flew that several other teams like Mercedes, McLaren, and even Ferrari were chasing the aero wizard. Eventually, it was Lawrence Stroll's team who bagged the engineer.
Lawrence Stroll deems Adrian Newey as 'the biggest part of the puzzle' at Aston Martin
After hiring Adrian Newey, Lawrence Stroll talked about how important the car designer is to the team. Speaking to F1.com in September this year, he said that he would be the key person in the team's technical department.
Stroll Sr. also believed that Newey's expertise and skill would positively affect the entire team moving forward, saying:
“Adrian is key, key, key, and the biggest part of the puzzle, certainly from a technical point of view, from a technical leadership point of view. He will be leading the team and I think that will have a trickle-down effect through the whole organisation,” Stroll said.
Adrian Newey has spent his whole life working for some of the top F1 teams such as Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull. His vehicles have performed incredibly well on the racetrack, bringing home 13 drivers' and 12 constructors' championships.
