Fans on social media have reacted to Mercedes taking the help of the cops after an anonymous user, claiming to be a member of the team, sent an email related to Lewis Hamilton and the team's relations. Team principal, Toto Wolff, has denied the possibility of someone within the team sending out the emails.
Lewis Hamilton is currently running his final season with Mercedes. He is set to drive for Ferrari in the 2025 F1 season, and this has been labeled as one of the biggest moves in the history of the sport. A major reason for this move is said to be Mercedes' current performance.
Users on social media claim that Mercedes is favoring George Russell in the current season as he will continue to be with the team. Following these accusations, a number of the team members as well as media personnel got an email from an unidentified user claiming that Mercedes was deliberately sabotaging Hamilton. The team has been trying to find out the source of this email, and they have now enlisted the assistance of law enforcement.
Users on social media found this to be an extreme move, as this fan wrote:
"The police? Really?"
"it’s a liability and very risky if they don’t take some sort of legal action towards this," a user wrote.
"You all really need to find a hobby or something it’s embarrassing how everything triggers you," another user claimed.
Some fans still seemed to be pointing fingers at the team.
"Why the police? You can also just ignore it if it isn't true," a user wrote.
"Consequences of a movement that they themselves have initiated and maintained, thus also a case of Karma somewhere," stated another.
Toto Wolff claims that a Mercedes employee did not send out the 'Lewis Hamilton' email
Wolff, the Austrian Team Principal, seems to be very confident with his employees. In a statement, he denied the possibility of any Mercedes employee sending the email to the media and other members of the team. He further said that the act was "disturbing," and hence it was important for the team to get help from the police. De Telegraaf quoted him:
"We know this is not coming from an employee of our team and we receive an incredible number of these types of emails. That is disturbing, especially when someone talks about death and things like that in such an email. That is why I said that we must investigate this fully and call the police. Online behavior like this must stop," Wolff said.
He added that Lewis Hamilton is his friend and that they "trust each other".
"Lewis has been part of this team for twelve years, we are friends and trust each other. I would like to say to all those crazy people out there: go see a psychiatrist."
Lewis Hamilton has raced for Mercedes since the 2013 season. He won six of his seven world titles with the team and his stint with the Brackley-based team is one of the most successful ones in the sport.
