Former F1 world champion Jenson Button claimed that Red Bull would have to get Sergio Perez out of the car and put someone else in if he fails to score points in the upcoming weekends. The Mexican driver has been under pressure for the last couple of races as he has not been able to score points consistently and help Max Verstappen at the front.
The Austrian team have had a challenge on their hands since Miami as teams like McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes have been regularly pushing them on the race weekends. They have managed to keep up with them with Verstappen but are in danger of losing out on major points due to Perez's absence in the Top 10.
Speaking with Sky Sports, Jenson Button mentioned that it was a 'massive issue' for Red Bull to not have Sergio Perez scoring points consistently against the catching pack. He said after the British GP weekend:
"It's a massive issue. This was just a terrible weekend. He was unlucky in some ways as well. This won't happen every weekend. They are on the back foot. Perez needs to be scoring some points at least, even if he's not finishing right behind Max."
"They can't let it go on forever. If at the next race, he doesn't score points again, soon enough, they will have to get him out of the car and put someone else in. It's not a nice feeling for a driver. It's tough. For a driver it's horrible but for them the constructors' is important," he added.
Red Bull team boss gives a damning verdict on Sergio Perez at Silverstone
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner stated that it was 'unsustainable' for Sergio Perez to miss out on points and pointed out that the Mexican was aware of the current situation.
As quoted by the aforementioned source, the Brit said:
"He knows it's unsustainable to not be scoring points. We have to be scoring points in that car. He knows his role and target. Nobody is more eager than Checo to find his form again."
As per RaceFans, Sergio Perez claimed that he was about to find progress when he gets the new floor that Max Verstappen had in Silverstone, adding:
“I’m just trying to find the solutions, really. I think we’re making good progress. We are just about to unlock a couple of tenths from our side and our life will be very different, back to where we were in the start of the year.”
Sergio Perez is also losing in the drivers' championship as both Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri have overtaken him. The Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton is also hot on his heels.
