Lewis Hamilton's wretched run of form in Qualifying continued in Brazil as the Mercedes driver failed to make it past Q1 at the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Hamilton was out of the session after his final flying lap was not enough to push him through to Q2, leaving him frustrated with his Mercedes.
Hamilton clocked 1:31.150 as his best lap in Q1, and unfortunately, he was slower by nearly two-tenths compared to McLaren's Lando Norris, the driver in 15th. Along with Hamilton, Oliver Bearman, Franco Colapinto, Nico Hülkenberg, and Zhou Guanyu saw their qualifying come to an end in Q1.
The rainy qualifying session on Sunday has put drivers in enormous difficulty as they struggle to get going at Interlagos. Multiple drivers lost control of their cars and hit the barriers, such as Colapinto in Q1, and Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll in Q2.
Following his exit, Hamilton took to the team radio to vent his frustrations with the Mercedes car. He said,
"This damn car, man. I’ve got nothing on the rear!"
Hamilton's teammate George Russell, however, had a decent outing in Q1, where he clocked 1:29.121 on the timesheet. He secured P3 in Q1. At the time of publishing the article, the session was red-flagged after Sainz crashed his SF-24.
Sunday's qualifying for the Brazilian GP has come after the FIA canceled Saturday's session on Saturday. The session was scheduled for 15:00 local time on Saturday, but after waiting for two hours, conditions did not improve and as a result, the session was postponed to Sunday.
Lewis Hamilton's suggestion for F1 chief on wet tires
Lewis Hamilton on Saturday shared a suggestion for F1 chief Stefano Domenicali on wet tires, after the FIA canceled the initial qualifying session. Hamilton told Domenicali in the pit lane on Saturday,
“You should’ve sent us out, this is ridiculous, we should go out! I wanna go out! If you give us better wet tyres or blankets we'd be able to run in this!”
The postponement of the qualifying has been a rare event in Formula 1 history.
