“This is such an emotional moment”: F1 world reacts as Lewis Hamilton and his father Anthony share an emotional hug post-British GP

After two winless seasons, Lewis Hamilton has finally clinched victory in the drama-filled British Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion shared an emotional moment with his father, Anthony, the moment he got out of his Mercedes-AMG W15 race car.

Ever since the title-deciding race in Abu Dhabi in 2021, Hamilton struggled to get back on the top step of the podium. This was largely due to the lack of aerodynamic performance and porpoising issues faced by the W13 and W14 cars in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, respectively. However, Mercedes had been working diligently to get their cars functioning on par with rivals such as Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Ferrari.

The 2024 season began on a promising note for the 'Silver Arrows.' With most of their issues ironed out, both Hamilton and his teammate George Russell were able to extract maximum performance from the W15. This allowed the team to gather crucial data and bring in updates ahead of schedule. While Russell had been showing good results since race one, Hamilton struggled to understand the new car for a while.

However, Lewis Hamilton's persistence has finally paid off. The 39-year-old British driver won his home Grand Prix at Silverstone by dominating on a tricky wet-dry race. While he was composed throughout the race, emotions began overflowing after the chequered flag was waved. Anthony, who was waiting at Parc Ferme to greet Hamilton, got a tight hug from his son as soon as the latter got out of the car.

The emotional moment was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a Hamilton fan. Here's a look at the X post, captioned:

"Lewis sobbing in his dad’s arms! they’ve been through it all! 😭😭❤️"
"This is such an emotional moment. I was crying watching him too. He has been through a lot this season and as a fan, I am so happy for him," a fan wrote in response.

“It means a lot to get this one” : Lewis Hamilton's emotional message on team radio after the record-breaking ninth victory at Silverstone

The Mercedes duo George Russell and Lewis Hamilton locked the front row for the British Grand Prix. They began the race in dominating fashion, peeling away from the pack during the early stages of the race.

However, with the first downpour, both Russell and Hamilton had to concede the lead to the McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. While the clever strategy call kept both Silver Arrow drivers in contention for the win, a mechanical failure caused Russell to end the race on lap 33.

This put Hamilton into the chase for the win against Norris. With the conditions improving and the track drying out, the #44 racer managed to undercut the young Briton for the race lead. However, with Max Verstappen's late-race charge on the hard compound tires, it was a fight to the finish for the seven-time Formula 1 world champion.

After winning a record-breaking ninth race in Silverstone, Hamilton got emotional on the team radio.

“It means a lot to get this one,” Hamilton said

For reference, the 2024 British Grand Prix happens to be Hamiton's 104th career race win.
