Max Verstappen and Lando Norris encountered yet another on-track skirmish during the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix. The championship contenders battled for position, leading to another intense duel.
It was Lap 10 of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez race when Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, and Charles Leclerc were all vying for the race lead. As all four drivers were trying to get to P1, Sainz used the DRS and the slipstream to move past Verstappen.
Norris seized the opportunity created by Sainz's move, diving inside to overtake the Red Bull driver. However, the three-time world champion was not going to let Norris go past easily. He aggressively defended his position, shoving Norris off the track.
This enraged Norris, who slammed the Dutchman on his team radio.
“I was ahead the whole way through the corner," Norris said. "This guy is dangerous! I just had to avoid a crash. It’s the same as last time! I’m gonna go to the wall in a minute!”
As Verstappen and Norris were engaged in their on-track scuffle, Leclerc overtook both of them and put Ferrari in a 1-2 position. As of Lap 20 of 71, the two Scarlet Ferraris were leading the Mexico City GP race.
This isn't the first time Verstappen and Norris have clashed this season. They had a notable incident in the Austrian Grand Prix, and more recently, in the United States Grand Prix, where the McLaren driver received a 5-second time penalty for a collision with Verstappen.
Stewards slammed Max Verstappen with 20-second time penalty
Soon after the incident, the FIA stewards took action, penalizing Verstappen with a 10-second time penalty for forcing Norris off the track. This wasn't all for for the Dutchman as the stewards imposed another 10-second penalty on the Dutchman for gaining an unfair advantage by going off the track.
The 20-second time penalty has put the defending champion out of the point distribution as of now, making the F1 drivers' championship more interesting for Norris and Leclerc.
