Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll was enraged by Daniel Ricciardo after they collided with each other at the 2024 F1 Chinese GP on Sunday.
The race at Shanghai was disrupted after Lap 21 when Valtteri Bottas stopped at Turn 11 due to mechanical failure on his Sauber. The safety car followed, which bunched up the field. Lance Stroll was right behind Daniel Ricciardo when the safety car period ended after five laps.
While defending world champion and race leader Max Verstappen was setting the pace of the pack before pushing, the backmakers were still completing the last safety car lap. Hence, all the cars were extremely close to each other while taking Turn 14.
Daniel Ricciardo had to brake on Turn 14 since he had Oscar Piastri and other drivers bunching up close to each other. Due to the Australian braking at the turn, Lance Stroll crashed into him from the back. This made the Canadian furious and he exclaimed on the radio that Ricciardo slammed on the brakes. He then asked the team to check the amount of front wing damage.
"This idiot just slammed on the brake! Check wing damage," Stroll said.
After the crash, Ricciardo had to retire from the Chinese GP due to damage to his car, while Stroll finished last in the race.
Lance Stroll found it tricky to drive the Aston Martin at the 2024 F1 Chinese GP qualifying
Lance Stroll struggled with his Aston Martin AMR24 at the 2024 F1 Chinese GP qualifying session. The Canadian was eliminated in the Q2 session and managed to secure P11 for the Grand Prix. On the other hand, his teammate Fernando Alonso secured P3 in the session.
Speaking about the qualifying session, Stroll mentioned that he found it tricky to drive in the qualifying session, but hoped that he would be stronger in the Chinese GP.
He also talked about certain setup changes the team made on his car after the sprint race since the car was even trickier to handle before the qualifying session.
“I think the car was tricky to drive today and hopefully we're stronger tomorrow,” Stroll said in the press conference.
“Yeah, quite a few changes, just because it was a really difficult race for us this morning. We'll see if we can manage our tires better tomorrow. I wanted to be in Q3 for sure. But we'll see what we can do tomorrow," he added.
After the 2024 F1 Chinese GP, Lance Stroll remains in 10th place in the drivers' championship table with only nine points, while Fernando Alonso is up in eighth spot with 31 points.
