Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton penned an emotional note to his fans after he won his ninth British GP on Sunday. The home hero was visibly emotional and could not stop his tears after crossing the chequered flag as he won a race in F1 after over two and half years, last winning in the 2021 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion displayed his exceptional skills behind the wheel in changeable conditions. He stayed calm throughout the race, despite facing the challenge from his teammate, George Russell, and the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. He also repelled a late challenge from old foe Max Verstappen to claim the win.
Via his Instagram account, Lewis Hamilton highlighted his achievement and thanked his fans for their support at the British GP, writing,
"YES 🍾🍾🍾 945 days since the last win and it’s finally come home. SILVERSTONE I LOVE YOU. There’s no crowd that deserves this more. This is love, this is family. Thank you all for the love and support. Massive shout-out to the team as well."
"Everyone in the garage and back at the factory have given long hard hours for this result. It’s not been easy but it’s brought us back-to-back wins for the team. Most importantly we didn’t lose hope. We didn’t give up. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU KEEP GOING. STILL, WE RISE," he wrote.
Lewis Hamilton chimes in about 'feeling' the roar of the crowd at Silverstone
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton stated that despite the noise of the car, he could still feel the roar of the crowd after he finished the race in P1 ahead of Max Verstappen.
In his post-race press conference, the 39-year-old spoke about the support from his home and reflected:
"I mean, the car's so loud, so hard to hear, but I could see it, and I really could feel it. You know, when you go through Turn 7, it's a long, long corner, and you see the guys on the left, or through the last couple of corners, you can also see this incredible crowd, or into Turn 15."
"It's really, really an unbelievable feeling to be on that track. This is the best track for me, personally. I think this is the best track in the world. But it's the fans also, the whole place, the wind direction that you have going into Stowe. That corner is incredible," he added.
With his first win of the 2024 season, Lewis Hamilton has closed the gap to his Mercedes teammate, George Russell in the Driver's Championship to one point and sits on 110 points as compared to the latter's 111.
Mercedes have slowly started racking up the points in the Constructor's Championship and are currently on 221 points and have a gap of 74 to McLaren in P3.
