Alpine's Sophia Floersch was involved in an on-track incident with Dino Beganovic during the Formula 3 Feature Race on Sunday. The 2024 British GP Feature race incident resulted in Floersch seeing her race jeopardized.
During Lap 4 of the race, Alexander Dunne of MP Motorsport came flying onto the track to rejoin the race after running wide. This resulted in an abrupt movement by Sophia Floersch, who, in turn, collided with Beganovic.
As the Van Amersfoort Racing driver lost control of her car, she hit the barrier. Soon after the incident, she came on the radio and informed her team that she was fine. Beganovic, of Prema Racing, and Dunne went on to continue the race, but Floersch retired.
Arvid Lindblad of Prema Racing won the feature race ahead of his teammate Gabriele Mini and Callum Voisin of Rodin Motorsport. With this win, Lindblad made it two out of two wins amid the dramatic wet-dry contest.
The FIA Formula 3 championship was in the United Kingdom, along with Formula 2 and Formula 1, for the 2024 British Grand Prix. This was the last race weekend of the European triple header this season.
The FIA penalized Alexander Dunne for his on-track impact on Sophia Floersch
Following the completion of the race, Sophia Floersch, Alexander Dunne, and Dino Beganovic were all summoned by the stewards. After a detailed discussion, the stewards decided to let Floersch and Beganovic go.
However, they handed a 10-place grid penalty to the MP Motorsport driver. Dunne will need to serve the penalty in the next race he takes part in. The FIA has released a statement on the matter:
"The Irish driver has been handed a 10-place grid penalty by the Stewards after he was found to have re-joined the track in an unsafe manner. The incident occurred on Lap 4 where Dunne ran wide at the exit of Turn 5 before cutting back onto the circuit."
"As he did, he caused Van Amersfoort Racing’s Sophia Floersch to move left which led her to collide with PREMA Racing’s Dino Beganovic, ultimately leading to her retirement from the race. The Stewards determined that Dunne was wholly responsible for the incident, and he will serve the penalty at the next race in which he participates."
As things stand, Sophia Floersch is currently in P27 in the Drivers' Championship with no points on the board after seven races. Gabriele Mini continues to lead the championship with 119 points, followed by British GP winner Arvid Lindblad with 113 points and Luke Browning with 112 points.
