Carlos Sainz had the worst possible start to his Singapore Grand Prix race weekend after the Ferrari driver crashed at the final corner of the Marina Bay Circuit. Sainz's crash in Q3 means that the Spanish driver will start his race from P10.
The Prancing Horse star let Oscar Piastri, who was on a flying lap pass him and was gearing up for his flying lap. However, he snapped, lost control of his SF-24, and hit the Techpro barrier. Following Sainz's crash, the session was red-flagged.
Here's a video of the crash:
Soon after the crash, Sainz took to his team radio and explained the situation. He said to his race engineer Riccardo Adami:
"I don't know if it was cold tires or dirty air or I was.... Big snap."
Interestingly, the crash took place after his massive crash in Baku with Sergio Perez in the penultimate lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend. His teammate, Charles Leclerc, qualified in P9 after the Monegasque driver's final lap time was deleted for going over track limits.
Carlos Sainz's aim to repeat his 2023 valiance falls apart
With his magical victory at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz broke Red Bull's long-standing winning streak and prevented what could have been an invincible season for the Austrian team. Coming into this year's race, the Spanish driver had a similar mindset.
"Unlike Baku, I really like the Marina Bay circuit a lot and I can’t wait to get out on track to see how competitive we are," Sainz said in the pre-race press conference. "On this circuit, it’s important to do as much running as possible to get to grips with the track and then you have to prepare well for qualifying."
"As grid position can make the difference between fighting for the win and having to settle for points. Once again, the smallest details can make the difference. And we have prepared very well for this weekend," he added.
As things stand, Sainz's chance to repeat his 2023 brilliance has hit a roadblock after he lost the rear of his Scarlet Ferrari during the final qualifying.
