Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz did not seem to appreciate Visa Cash App RB driver Liam Lawson disobeying the blue flags during the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix. The Spaniard had a comfortable afternoon at the Autodrome Hermanos Rodriguez as he went on to convert his pole position into a second win of the 2024 season.
While Sainz did not have a smooth start to the race as he lost his lead to Max Verstappen off the line, the Spaniard was able to reclaim his position after the safety car restart, overtaking the Red Bull driver at the end of Turn 1.
Despite leading for most of the race, Carlos Sainz was briefly annoyed while lapping some cars during the race. In a clip floating on social media, the Ferrari driver seemed frustrated with Red Bull Junior Liam Lawson as he did not let him by and obey the blue flags. On his team radio, the Spaniard could be heard shouting:
"Lawson, Lawson. That should be a penalty. He did a whole two sectors in front."
However, his momentary annoyance with the Kiwi did not spoil his victory celebrations in Mexico as Sainz claimed the fourth race win of his career.
Carlos Sainz explains his overtake on Max Verstappen in Mexico
Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz said he caught Red Bull driver Max Verstappen by 'surprise' while overtaking him after the safety car restart.
Speaking during the post-race press conference, the 30-year-old detailed his brief on-track tussle with the Dutch driver and said:
"Probably catching him a bit by surprise because I was quite far back but before Turn 1 I got a really good tow on DRS, but I saw that I was probably going to be a bit too far back. But then right in the last 100 metres, I felt like I had a good momentum and I've been feeling very confident braking into Turn 1 this weekend," Sainz said.
Praising the car and the recent upgrades, he further said:
"The car has been giving me good confidence to brake late there and I just went for it and it happened. Yeah, also this mentality of knowing I had a bit less to lose in that battle and that I could be aggressive and send one. And yeah, I'm glad it happened because I needed to get back to P1 to then set my pace from there," he added.
The 2024 Mexico GP winner refused to preview the upcoming Brazilian GP and claimed that he wanted to enjoy his Mexico win, saying:
"It's a good question, and please let me enjoy Mexico before I think about Brazil because I'm going to enjoy tonight. And as I said, I want to enjoy this one. I want to let it sink in and enjoy."
With Carlos Sainz's win in Mexico, Ferrari usurped Red Bull in the battle for the Constructors Championship and now holds P2 in the standings behind McLaren.
