Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was spotted running through the streets of his home ground Monaco, as the torchbearer for the 2024 Paris Olympics. This tradition of the Olympic torch relay has been followed for almost nine decades.
Here is the clip of Leclerc marching as the torchbearer:
The Olympic torch relay is a tradition that started in 1936. A torch is flamed in Olympia, Greece, and it is then relayed to the country that is hosting the Olympics that year, going through different principalities. Paris is the host of the 2024 Olympics and as a part of the same relay, Charles Leclerc was one of the torch bearers through the many countries it will go from.
This is another prestigious moment that the 26-year-old shared with his country. Earlier this month, he became the first Monegasque F1 driver to win a race at his home after finishing the Monaco Grand Prix. After a long spree of what many called "unlucky events" (a crash in the first race, gearbox failure before the start of the race from pole position, strategy issues), Charles Leclerc was able to win the race from pole position.
Ferrari has improved quite a bit from the 2023 season. They have won two races so far in the season and are currently in second place in the constructors' championship. Leclerc revealed that the team had worked on the persisting issues in the last "seven to eight months."
Charles Leclerc gives insights on recent Ferrari developments
The 2024 season has been competitive for the Maranello-based team so far and they look closer to Red Bull than they were last season. Leclerc revealed that this was a result of the team's consistent improvements in the past months. He said, according to RacingNews365:
"I think we've had a really good approach in the last seven to eight months in order to be very quick in addressing the issues that we had on the car, and that's why we are the team that have improved the most in those in this period.
"So we need to keep focusing on ourselves, not look at others, and keep pushing to optimize every single detail. But definitely, the biggest difference from last year to this year is the car being a lot more drivable, faster, and as a driver is just a continuous improvement."
Both McLaren and Ferrari have been competing within the top teams this season. Red Bull, who still lead the championships with Max Verstappen, do not appear to have the same dominance they did last season. Charles Leclerc has had a consistent season so far and appears to be in contention for the world championship, given they improve steadily.
