Mercedes driver George Russell was overjoyed with his pole position and shared a touching moment with his girlfriend, Carmen Montero Mundt, at Silverstone on Saturday. The British driver secured his third career pole position and a second in the last four races, having gotten the fastest time in Montreal last month as well.
The 26-year-old looked the faster of the two Mercedes drivers throughout the qualifying session on Saturday and came up trumps against the McLaren of Lando Norris, who was the favorite to take the pole position ahead of the session.
Before heading for the media duties, Russell shared a celebratory moment with his family and girlfriend, lifting the latter in his arms above the ground, with his feelings clear for all to see.
In his post-qualifying press conference, the Mercedes driver spoke about his qualifying result and reflected:
"Yeah, this is definitely one of the best feelings I've ever had on a Saturday afternoon. The car was just insane.
"When we went out in Q3, it just really came alive and without a doubt, one of the best feelings I've ever had driving this circuit and crossing the line, seeing my name in P1, and then seeing we're both on the front row. We couldn't have even dreamt of that after the first three or four races."
George Russell analyzes his P1 in the British GP qualifying
George Russell finished the qualifying session ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, resulting in a British 1-2-3 at Silverstone.
Although the W15 was the fastest over one lap, Russell hinted that it wouldn't necessarily be the same case for the main race on Sunday as he believed that Norris and Max Verstappen, starting in P4, would be in the faster cars. He told the media:
"Yeah, I think. realistically we know we're probably a tenth or two behind Lando and Max, but I think we've got a good fight on our hands. But the weather's going to play a huge part in that. You know, it's been raining and drying up throughout the last couple of days. There's a bit of rain in the forecast for tomorrow."
He even predicted that the main race could run in conditions similar to the changeable conditions in Montreal last month, where he led the field at the start but lost a couple of positions to finish in P3 after being overtaken by both Norris and Verstappen, adding:
"We're probably on course for another Montreal-style race where it's going to be very changeable. So it's going to be a long race. But we're obviously in a great position to fight for victory." he added.
George Russell is P7 in the Driver's Championship on 111 points and is just a point shy of Oscar Piastri and seven points shy of Sergio Perez, who will start the race P5 and P19 respectively.
