Former F1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen's son Robin was seen celebrating his latest victory in go-karting. The erstwhile Ferrari driver retired from the sport at the end of the 2021 season after his three years with the Alfa Romeo F1 team.
The Finnish driver had made 349 race starts which included 21 race wins and a World Championship title in 2007. To this date, he remains the last driver to win a driver's title for the Italian team.
However, it looks like F1 might see another Raikkonen racing in the sport in the coming years as Kimi Raikkonen's son Robin added yet another cap to his feather in his glowing karting career. In a video posted by the 44-year-old's wife, Mintuu, we can see the nine-year-old overjoyed after his victory in Switzerland.
Robin Raikkonen dominated the 2024 edition of the Rotax Max Challenge Switzerland as he took two victories in as many days to emerge as the race winner while being watched by his father Kimi Raikkonen and former Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene in Franciacorta.
In early 2024, the former McLaren driver shared his son's progress on the Ferrari F1 simulator on his social media platform, Instagram, writing:
"Great day with Robin at the @sim_maranello. Robin loved the feeling of real speed with the simulator and it for sure is good practice for the upcoming season. I also got to try the simulators and I am really impressed of the accuracy and feel of it. I was still a bit faster, but not for long, the boy is fast."
F1 pundit hails Kimi Raikkonen's son after his initial success in karting
F1 pundit Toni Vilander has stated that Kimi Raikkonen has 'been sensibly' proceeding with the nine-year-old's karting career.
Former racing driver and now a pundit for ViaPlay said of the young Robin (via Motorsport-NextgenAuto):
"I think Kimi (Raikkonen) is proceeding very sensibly with Robin. Compared to our day, the biggest change is that everything happens at a much younger age.
"By the age of 10, you already need experience in Italy. The family is doing everything very cleverly. They post Robin’s results a little later so that not everyone knows what they’re doing." he added.
Former Finnish driver Mika Salo too expressed similar thoughts about the nine-year-old:
"Obviously we have to remember that he’s still a child so it’s completely premature to predict what will happen in the future. But I’ve calculated that the entire journey from karting to Formula 1 costs about 10 million euros. And as we know, Kimi has money but also exceptionally strong contacts and an excellent reputation."
Kimi Raikkonen's son already drives for the CRG team, which had previously given opportunities to a young Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
