Lando Norris complained about Max Verstappen overtaking under a virtual safety car while the latter was trying to congratulate him and George Russell after the 2024 F1 Azerbaijan GP. Right after Verstappen's gesture, Norris complained on the radio and his team took note.
On the penultimate lap of the race at Baku, Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez had a major collision with each other during their chase for the third position. Due to this, the race ended under the virtual safety car, with Oscar Piastri winning his second GP. Because of the crash, Mercedes's George Russell got the opportunity to bag third place on the podium.
After the race ended, Verstappen, who finished P5, positioned his car alongside Norris and waved at him, acknowledging him after the race. He then went up to Russell and gave him a thumbs-up before moving ahead past both drivers.
Seeing this gesture from the Red Bull driver, Norris said on the radio Verstappen was overtaking cars during a virtual safety car period.
"Max is overtaking everyone. There is still a VSC, right? So, I don't know [...]" Norris said on the radio.

Both Verstappen and Norris are currently locked in a title battle, particularly after Red Bull's performance dipped, and McLaren drastically closed the gap to the defending world champions. Though Verstappen continues to lead the drivers' championship table with 313 points, Norris is close behind in second place with 254 points.
Lando Norris happy to finish ahead of his title rival Max Verstappen
Despite losing out on a podium finish in the Azerbaijan GP, Lando Norris was happy to defeat his title rival Max Verstappen in terms of final positions at the checkered flag. Though the British driver started the race down in 15th, he had a brilliant recovery drive and secured a fourth-place finish, while Verstappen started the race in sixth and finished fifth.
Speaking after the race, Norris said even after the yellow flag and his poor qualifying session had put paid to his hopes for a possible podium finish, Sunday was a "good day."
"I just need points. Of course, to finish ahead of Max is spectacular, from where we started and for our (title) hopes. Yesterday is still on my mind because it was just frustrating, and what could have been if that didn't happen. Anyway, a good day," Norris said (via Sky Sports).
Norris was able to narrow the gap to Verstappen in the standings by a small margin only, but his team McLaren rejoiced as it took the top spot in the constructors' table from Red Bull, after Oscar Piastri took his second F1 win in Baku. The British team now leads the table with 476 points, while the defending world champion is in second with 456 points.
