Lewis Hamilton recently visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as co-chair of the 2025 Met Gala event. The event details were announced on October 9, 2024. Various co-chairs, including the seven-time world champion, got an opportunity to share their thoughts on it.
Since Hamilton has always used his massive platform to spread positivity and fight against racism, he has been recognized as one of the leading voices on the matter. He has also been heavily connected to the fashion world. He has attended the Met since 2015 and is also a brand ambassador of luxurious brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Dior.
Hence, the Mercedes star was chosen as a co-chair for the 2025 Met Gala event. The event's theme will be "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style", which draws inspiration from Monica L Miller's 2009 book called Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
Lewis Hamilton was also allowed to speak on the Met's theme for 2025, where he shared his story of being a victim of racism and how he rose from it. The clip of his speech was later circulated by many F1 fan accounts on X. He said:
"My routine was very rigid, and I was the only black kid on the race track, so there was no one really like me to look up to. It wasn't until later in my career that I found the courage to push beyond the boundaries that I'd been confined to for such a long time and to transcend the preconceived notions that attempt to limit whether or how I navigate spaces where I, as so many black people, had felt historically marginalised."
Along with Hamilton, popular American singers like Pharrell Williams and ASAP Rocky, actor Colman Domingo, and Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour will also co-chair the event next year. Famous basketball player LeBron James has also been made an honorary co-chair.
Lewis Hamilton feels honored to be part of the 2025 Met Gala as a co-chair
After his speech and attendance at the 2025 Met Gala announcement, Lewis Hamilton posted a few pictures of the event where he not only gave a speech as a co-chair but also met other co-chairs like Anna Wintour and Pharrell Williams.
On his official Instagram account, Lewis Hamilton wrote about how the theme of the upcoming Met Gala resonates with him so much, particularly because he was a victim of racism when he tried to make it as a racing driver.
"I’m beyond honored to be one of the co-chairs for next year’s Met Gala, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," Hamilton said.
"This theme speaks to me deeply...Growing up as the only Black kid on the track, so often that pressure got to me...For Black people across the diaspora, fashion is self-preservation. Fashion is resilience, and I can’t wait to further explore and amplify our underrepresented voices," he added.
When it comes to racing, Lewis Hamilton is currently sixth in the drivers' championship with 174 points. He has won two races this season, one at his home race in Silverstone, and another in Belgium before summer break.
