Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen were left dumbfounded after finding out that Lando Norris had two sets of medium tires for the final phase of the race on Sunday at Silverstone. The McLaren driver once again let the opportunity to win his second race in F1 slip away from his hands in changeable conditions.
The 24-year-old was the favorite to win the British GP on Sunday after he made the pass on Hamilton during the changeable conditions, and looked like the faster driver in the wet as well.
However, his strategic error of going onto the soft tires instead of mediums with 13 laps to go proved to be a mistake, as he was unable to regain the lead and also lost P2 to Verstappen.
In the cooldown room after the race, Lewis Hamilton asked if Lando Norris fitted the soft tires same as him:
“You on soft as well? But you had two new mediums?”
To which his young compatriot replied:
"I know."
Hamilton further said:
“Yeah, you could have gone to the medium. A new medium would have been faster probably,” he said.
Max Verstappen too looked bewildered by the decision from Lando Norris to put on soft tires due to the severe tire degradation in the race.
Lando Norris gives a damning verdict on his P3 finish at Silverstone
McLaren driver Lando Norris said that he was 'fed up' with the increasing number of errors from him and the team in the last couple of races given the competitiveness of the MCL36 in the 2024 season.
Speaking with Sky Sports, the young Brit was adamant that he could not wait for the future and had to start converting and winning races in the present. He said:
"I know (it's a podium at the British GP) but I'm fed up of just saying I should have done better and I should have done this and could have done that, or whatever. I don't care if it takes time, I don't want it to take time. I should be doing it now, we should be winning now."
"I should be making better decisions than what I'm making. I'm just disappointed, it's a win. It's a win in Formula 1 and I'm not going to settle for something less when we should have achieved it," he added.
Despite arguably having the fastest car in the last four races and leading each of them at some points, Lando Norris has failed to convert any of them into race wins.
He has also lost ground to Max Verstappen in the driver's championship as the Dutchman has finished ahead of him in the last four races and extended his lead to 84 points after 12 races and three sprints in that 2024 season so far.
