Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton laughed together when Lando Norris tried to explain his and Red Bull driver's tussle at the start of the 2024 F1 Spanish GP. The race was won by Verstappen, while Norris secured P2 and Hamilton ended up in P3.
The Spanish GP had loads of thrilling moments, particularly at the top of the grid. Right after the five red lights went off, second-placed Max Verstappen started hunting Lando Norris from the inside line before Turn 1. To defend his lead, Norris tried to close the gap by swerving to the right. This forced Verstappen to run his car off the track and over the grass.
While both drivers were fighting, George Russell took the lead in the race. However, he was later overtaken by Verstappen. In the end, the three-time world champion won the race, while Norris finished second.
Speaking in the post-race press conference, Lando Norris explained that it was hard to judge the amount of space he was leaving for Verstappen. When he said that there was enough space, both Verstappen and Hamilton started laughing while looking at each other. This interrupted Norris' explanation as he smiled and looked at them.
"I mean, it's always difficult to judge in that situation. I can't get a tape measure out and measure it perfectly. I'm not going to make his life easy. There was enough space, I think. What? I'm just going to stop talking," Norris said.
The McLaren driver tried to continue his statement but was again interrupted by the Red Bull and Mercedes drivers. While smiling, he asked Verstappen whether he would like to answer the question.
"I think it was just racing. I gave him enough space. I don't think at any point there wasn't enough space for him to stay on the track. What? Do you want to answer it?" he added.
Max Verstappen gives his take on the early tussle with Lando Norris in the Spanish GP
Right after Lando Norris explained his point of view on his wheel-to-wheel battle with Max Verstappen, the latter also chimed in and shared his view.
Speaking in the post-race press conference, he initially joked that he would give Norris a big mirror as a birthday gift. He then added that it was hard racing and that he would have done the same in that particular situation.
"I think I know his birthday present already. So it's either like a big mirror or some glasses, and it will be fine! It's OK. No, listen, I mean, it's hard racing for sure. If you turn it around, would I have done the same? I probably would have done the same," Verstappen said.
"No, listen, you always try to squeeze it to the limit. I also really wanted to avoid potential contact, because you don't want to rub wheels and potentially damage your suspension," he added.
After the Spanish GP, Max Verstappen extended his lead in the drivers' championship, with a total of 219 points. Lando Norris is in second place with 150 points.
