Red Bull driver Sergio Perez was seen pushing Carlos Sainz's head after their massive crash on the penultimate lap of the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Perez looked like he was having a brilliant weekend in Baku, behind McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
The Mexican driver was unable to make an overtake on Leclerc on the start of the penultimate lap stick, as the Monegasque passed him on the exit of turn 1. This left a gap that Sainz was able to use to momentarily take P3 from the Red Bull.
The two drivers collided on the straight, both refusing to give up space, and crashed into the wall. Perez was furious with the Ferrari driver and expressed his feelings on his team radio. A video being shared on social media shows what happened once the Red Bull driver had gotten out of the car.
In the video shared by a fan on X (formerly Twitter), Perez can be seen pushing Sainz's head back after getting out of the car in anger:
The 34-year-old was having a great race, biding his time behind Leclerc and Piastri as they were dueling it out at the head of the race, for almost 30 laps. He looked like he was in contention for the win at this point, with Leclerc's rear tires suffering from degradation in the final laps. Perez pounced on the opportunity at the start of Lap 50, and made the overtake for second place, before the incident with Sainz.
Sergio Perez gives his take on collision with Carlos Sainz
Red Bull driver Sergio Perez stated that he believed that there was a lot of room for both himself and Sainz on Turn 2 and the incident could have been avoided.
Speaking with F1.com, the Mexican said,
“I felt that exiting Turn 2, there was plenty of room between both cars and within a meter or two, we ended up making contact. It’s very unfortunate. It all happened so quickly. I think Carlos was trying to follow the tow from Charles as he went to the inside, and that really made things really hard.
"I feel super sad for the team, but the positive thing is the pace is back, the changes to the car seem to have put us back in contention. We were fighting for the win and looking like we were going to have a strong result – that’s what we need to take out of today. We need to keep it up with the progress we have made and hopefully in the coming races we can be very strong."
It was the first time since the Chinese Grand Prix that Perez formed himself in contention for a podium, as he has been struggling to match the pace of his teammate Max Verstappen for large parts of the season.
After his crash on Sunday, he lost his seventh position in the driver's championship to George Russell. Despite having the same number of points, the Mercedes driver has a race win, putting him ahead of the Red Bull driver.
