A slow-motion clip of the collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris during the 2024 F1 Austrian GP recently surfaced on X. It showcases Verstappen's slight movement under braking that caused the contact between the two.
Verstappen started the race at the Red Bull Ring from pole position, while Norris was right behind him in second place. For the majority of the GP, the Red Bull star was several seconds ahead of the McLaren, but the race came alive in the latter stages. New medium tires helped Norris start putting pressure on the defending world champion, who was on a used set of medium tires and had a slow pit stop.
Following their second pitstops, the race between the two was on. Lando Norris kept catching up on Max Verstappen, who was struggling with grip. On several occasions, the McLaren driver tried to overtake Verstappen at Turns 1, 3, and 4, but the latter kept retaking the lead of the Austrian GP.
On Lap 71, Norris once again tried to overtake Verstappen from the outside on Turn 3. Since their cars were very close to each other, it caused a major collision between the two. Both cars suffered a puncture while Norris' car also sustained damaged to the front axle and the wings.
Recently, a clip was posted on X of a helicopter shot of the incident. When that clip is slowed down, it was observed that Verstappen moved slightly to his left, from where Norris was trying to overtake him. Since both were approaching Turn 3 and braking, Verstappen was moving under braking right before the incident.
After the collision, Norris had to retire the car from the race and failed to score any points. The Red Bull driver on the other hand was able to make another pitstop, and finished the race in fifth place.
The chaos allowed George Russell to take the lead and win his first race of the 2024 F1 season. McLaren's Oscar Piastri finished second while Ferrari's Carlos Sainz secured third.
Lando Norris's friendship with Max Verstappen depends on what the latter will say about the Austrian GP collision
Lando Norris recently talked about his on-track incident with his good friend Max Verstappen at the 2024 F1 Austrian GP.
While both were fighting for the race win, they made contact which resulted in both getting punctures. Norris suffered a lot more than Verstappen since the collision damaged other parts of his car to the point where he had to retire from the Austrian GP.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Norris said that he would retain some respect for Verstappen if he admitted his mistake. However, if he does not, the McLaren driver would lose a lot of respect for the defending world champion.
"I don't know. It depends what he says. If he says he did nothing wrong, then I'll lose a lot of respect for that. If he admits to being a bit stupid and running into me and just being a bit reckless in a way, then I'll have a small amount of respect for it," Norris said.
After the chaotic and thrilling Austrian GP, Max Verstappen continues to lead the drivers' championship with 237 points, while Lando Norris is in second place with 156 points.
