When the word 'shoey' pops up within the motorsports fraternity, one can directly link it to Daniel Ricciardo. Over the years, the Aussie F1 star has made drinking from shoes so popular that his fellow drivers and celebrities often get involved in the spirit. One such man is Hollywood star Sir Patrick Stewart, who took part in Ricciardo's customary celebration in 2017.
When Daniel Ricciardo held off Sebastian Vettel to claim the podium at the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix, he had no idea about what was about to come from Sir Stewart. The actor, who was present at the presentation ceremony after the Montreal race, stunned the eight-time Grand Prix winner as he indulged himself with a beer and boot.
It all started with Ricciardo, who, after claiming P3 with Red Bull in Canada, got into the mood to carry out the customary tradition. As soon as he was done, he asked Sir Stewart if he was interested in joining.
"Would you like some? Yeah" Ricciardo asked.
"I'd, I'd love some, yeah," affirmed Sir Stewart Patrick.
The Australian driver then went on to take out his shoe, poured the drink inside, and handed it over to the $75 million worth (as per Celebrity Net Worth) star.
"You are a good man," said Daniel Ricciardo as he handed over the shoe with the drink to Sir Patrick.
"Thank you, cheers," shouted the latter.
Here's how the entire ordeal took place:
Besides Sir Patrick Stewart, Ricciardo also successfully insisted his fellow F1 drivers, such as Lewis Hamilton, and Lando Norris, do the shoey with him.
Ricciardo's last shoey came when he won the 2021 Italian Grand Prix after Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton crashed out. However, F1 fans are unlikely to witness the unique and customary tradition from the Honey Badger anymore after RB sacked him recently to bring in Liam Lawson.
The team on Thursday announced that it has parted ways with the Aussie driver. Ricciardo received the opportunity to race for the Red Bull sister team last year after Nyck de Vries was sacked following the 2023 British Grand Prix.
Daniel Ricciardo was taken aback by Sir Patrick Stewart's shoey
Daniel Ricciardo during an interview in March 2024 revealed that Sir Patrick Stewart's shoey from the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix surprised him, and made him wonder if his customary tradition has "gone too far."
Ricciardo was in a conversation with Nova FM where he told hosts Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald, Kate Ritchie, and Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli that he was shocked after Sir Stewart agreed to do the shoey. Here's what the 35-year-old driver said:
"Gerard Butler was there [presenting], and [Sir] Patrick Stewart... he actually asked to do a shoey. That was the moment for me when I thought, 'wow, this has gone too far.'"
Ricciardo's illustrious F1 career boasts 257 race starts, eight race wins, 32 podiums, three pole positions, and 17 fastest laps. During his ten plus years of F1 career, he raced for HRT, Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Renault, McLaren, and RB (formerly Toro Rosso).
