Lewis Hamilton has devised a strategy to keep Lando Norris behind and take full advantage of the front-row lockout on Sunday. The Mercedes duo of Hamilton and George Russell are set to start the race from the first row, and Hamilton has hinted at a possible 1-2 finish at Silverstone.
Formula 1 is in the United Kingdom for the 12th race of the 2024 season. As the most popular form of motorsport arrived at Silverstone, George Russell impressed his home crowd with the pole position. It was an all-British one-two-three in the qualifying, with Hamilton and Norris following suit.
While the Silver Arrows fans can rejoice at Saturday's performance, a lot of work is still to be done. As Norris is in fiery form with his MCL38, one can expect him to push for the race win on Sunday, something that he was unable to accomplish at Red Bull Ring last time.
Russell and Hamilton were hugely impressive with their runs in FP3 as well. They took P1 and P2 in the session and continued their form on the business side of things in qualifying. This is something Hamilton will be looking to replicate on Sunday.
Here's what Hamilton said in the post-qualifying interview:
"I think the car felt great. It was just about getting the tire temperatures in the right place. I feel really confident about the car tomorrow. If we can work together we can keep Lando behind."
Championship leader Max Verstappen qualified in P4, followed by Oscar Piastri, Nico Hulkenberg, and Carlos Sainz in P5, P6, and P7, respectively. Lance Stroll, Alex Albon, and Fernando Alonso will start from P8, P9, and P10.
Lewis Hamilton's teammate George Russell wary of Lando Norris' threat
Fresh from his Spielberg victory last weekend, George Russell claimed his second pole position of the season with a 1:25.819 on the timesheet. He was nearly two-tenths faster than his teammate Lewis Hamilton and McLaren's Lando Norris.
Banking on a much-improved W15, one can expect Russell to aim for his second win of 2024 and the third of his career. However, similar to his teammate, he is well aware of the Norris threat.
Speaking about the same in the post-qualifying interview, the 26-year-old said,
"The car at the moment is feeling good. It really came alive in qualifying. It's going to be tight with Lando."
Besides the top three, Verstappen could be a big contender for the race win on Sunday. The Dutchman is armed with RB20, which has a superior race pace, and straight-line speed that can topple the top three and help him win his eighth race of this season.
