Aston Martin team boss, Mike Krack recently summarized the subpar stint his team had in the 2024 F1 season. The Silverstone-based team was unable to get out of the midfield and challenge other top teams.
Ever since early 2023, Aston Martin has been experiencing a gradual decline in performance. They started the 2023 season with a bang, allowing Fernando Alonso to finish on podiums and challenging the likes of Max Verstappen in qualifying sessions. As the season progressed, they lost their charm and tumbled down the pecking order.
In 2024, the tables did not turn as the British team continued to struggle. In several races, neither Alonso nor Lance Stroll could score points. The team was unable to close the gap to top teams like Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull.
Speaking to F1.com after the 2024 F1 Abu Dhabi, Mike Krack said that Aston Martin had higher expectations, which were not fulfilled. He added that the team went in the opposite direction in terms of development and was stuck in the midfield.
“Yes, I think all in all a difficult season comes to an end. We had higher expectations. I think we started where realistically we thought we would be as a team. We wanted to close the gap to the teams in front of us. It went rather the other direction, we were caught by the midfield to which we had quite a substantial gap at the beginning of the year, so that is why we can’t be happy with how it went," Krack said.
On the bright side, Krack said that the team has learned a lot and is already developing their 2025 F1 car, hoping that it will push them forward.
“But we have also learned our lessons in terms of what we have to do differently going forward, and we are full steam [ahead] on next year’s car to make it a better contender [than] the one we have now.” he added.
Fernando Alonso feels he is ready to move forward after a subpar 2024 F1 season with Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso talked about how he and the team would gradually move forward into 2025 after resetting from their poor performance in 2024. Speaking to F1.com after the 2024 F1 Abu Dhabi GP, Alonso said that the team has learned a lot about the car that can be used or improved next year.
"Ready to go for 2025 with a little bit of reset on things. Also the car, you know, we learned a lot of things this year that we can apply into next year's project. So, yeah, moving forward," Alonso said.
At the end of the season, Aston Martin finished fifth in the constructors's standings with 94 points, while Fernando Alonso finished ninth in the drivers' standings with 70 points.
