McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has claimed that they, as a team, has the 'hardest part nailed' of making the car fast but needs to capitalize on their speed. The Woking-based team has arguably been the fastest on the track in terms of pure performance since the Miami GP, where they took the win courtesy of Lando Norris.
However, they have squandered several opportunities to add to their tally of race wins by making errors in Canada, Spain, Austria, and Silverstone. The team has been caught out strategically one too many times.
Speaking with Speedcafe, Oscar Piastri mentioned that he, as a driver, is ready to get the first race win in F1 after two P2s in Monaco and Austria. He said:
“I think, definitely, I'm ready to do it. The kind of good but kind of bad thing is it's never been the same thing that's prevented us from winning. Obviously [in Silverstone] we made a wrong call.
“So I guess it's a good thing that it's not been a repeated error or mistake but I feel like there's been a good handful now, I think on both sides of the garage, where we felt like we could have won the race. We've got the hardest part nailed. We've got an incredibly quick car, we just need to capitalize on using it," he added.
Oscar Piastri previews the Hungarian GP this weekend
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has stated that he is heading to the Hungarian GP on the back of strong performances at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone, where he had a shot at victory but eventually finished P2 and P4, respectively.
As per PitPass, the Aussie driver said:
"I'm heading to Hungary off the back of two strong weekends in Austria and Great Britain where I've been happy with my driving. We had some missed opportunities at Silverstone but it was clear that there was good pace in the car and that is encouraging."
He also revealed that he had success in the junior categories at the Hungaroring and remains hopeful of repeating the performance this year:
"The Hungaroring is a track that I had success at in the junior formulae so I'm looking forward to returning. The whole team is going into this race with a lot of confidence and motivation."
Oscar Piastri finished P5 at the 2023 Hungarian GP but was adrift of the pack fighting for P2, which included his teammate Lando Norris, Sergio Perez, and Lewis Hamilton.
In the 2024 season, the 23-year-old has been closer to his teammate on track as he currently sits P5 in the driver's championship on 124 points. He is still 47 points behind Norris, who is in P2, after 12 races and three Sprints.
