Former F1 driver and Max Verstappen's father Jos Verstappen once said that the chances of him and his son racing at the 24 Hours of LeMans are slim. The Dutch driver was responding to his son, three-time world champion Max. Jos has raced in several other motorsport categories apart from his stint in F1 in the '90s and '00s.
Max, in 2019, had expressed a desire to race alongside him in the LeMans LMP1, adding he found the whole atmosphere was fantastic. While speaking with Motorsport-Total in 2020, Jos addressed his son Max's comments.
He said:
“I have to be close to him in terms of pure speed. No, I’m just kidding. I just like to drive and see what comes out of it. But we haven’t made any plans yet. Maybe I’ll do it for his sake one day, but I wouldn’t want to just go along for the ride. If I take part, then I also want to win. Otherwise, I’ll leave it alone."
He recently told Verstappen.com:
"I enjoy rallying. Let the young guys race at Le Mans; I find rallying much more exciting.”
The 52-year-old has driven in categories such as LeMans, Endurance Racing, and Rallying over the years and still competes to this day.
Max Verstappen chimes in on racing at Le Mans 24 hour
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen spoke fondly about the iconic 24 Hours of LeMans and shared his memories of seeing his father race in the LMP1 and LMP2 as a kid.
Speaking to the media, the three-time world champion said:
“For sure. I mean, I remember when I was like 11, 12 years old, my dad was racing at Le Mans in LMP2 and then LMP1 the year after. It is something pretty incredible. Even at the time, you’re a young kid, but the whole atmosphere is fantastic – and the team element of it- because it’s not only you, right?
“You have to work with your teammates to try and find the right compromise with the set-up. I’ve been following it a lot here and there you have a few chats as well. It’s pretty incredible, the difference, so they need to sort that out."
Verstappen also spoke about the opportunity of him racing in the iconic event, saying:
"For sure in the future, I would like to race. It’s an incredible event.”
Currently, Max Verstappen looks to have his hands full with the championship battle with McLaren driver Lando Norris. Although the three-time world champion remains 78 points ahead of his British rival with 10 races and three Sprints remaining, he does not have the same advantage of better machinery over his rivals as he did over the previous two campaigns.
