Who is Jack Doohan? The driver rumored to replace Esteban Ocon if he's benched by Alpine

The Alpine F1 team could have an all-new driver lineup for the Canadian Grand Prix if they decide to bench Esteban Ocon for the next race. Bruno Famin, the team principal, was fuming with the French driver for colliding with teammate Pierre Gasly in Monaco and was later spotted chatting with reserve driver Jack Doohan.

Ocon and Gasly collided at the Le Portier corner before the tunnel in the former's optimistic bid to take P10 from the latter. The move didn't work out well for him as he understeered into Gasly and was airborne after making contact with his A524 on Lap 1.

Famin, in his interview with Canal+, spoke about the incident and said:

"It's sad, this kind of incident. It's exactly what we didn't want to see. And there will be the appropriate consequences."

One of the consequences could be benching Esteban Ocon for the next race in Canada and replacing him with reserve driver Jack Doohan. The talented Aussie driver has been involved with the team for quite some time now, and is a part of the driving academy, having driven for them in multiple free practice sessions.

Doohan is 21 years old and has raced in the junior categories of the sport, namely F3 and F2, where he finished P2 and P3 in the 2021 and 2023 seasons respectively. He is the son of famous motorsport racing icon Mick Doohan, who raced in the Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing for a decade in the 1990s.

He became the reserve driver for the BWT Alpine F1 team in the 2023 season and continued with the role in the 2024 season as well, but is yet to make his debut in the sport.

F1 pundit gives his take on Alpine team boss potentially benching Esteban Ocon

Sky Sports F1 pundit Craig Slater stated that the Alpine F1 team boss was 'seriously considering' benching Esteban Ocon for the Canadian GP.

He said to Sky Sports:

“Famin spoke angrily. He talked about taking a tough decision which everyone has interpreted as benching Esteban Ocon for the next race in Canada. What I can say to you is that that is still a serious consideration for the Alpine boss Bruno Famin."
“He will do what is best for the team but if he decides that leaving Esteban Ocon out for a week is a demonstration of how team discipline needs to be, he is prepared to do that, but that decision has yet to be taken.

Slater added:

“There were face-to-face meetings between Ocon and Famin after the grand prix. Ocon apologized privately and publicly afterward via social media. Let’s see what happens.”

Ocon apologized for the incident and took responsibility for the crash on his social media after the Monaco GP.
