Fernando Alonso was quite pleased with his result at the 2023 F1 Miami GP. The Spaniard once again finished third and celebrated his fourth podium of the 2023 F1 season. Though he had a bit of a lonely race, Alonso was able to keep up with the Red Bulls and keep the rest of the field behind him.
Speaking to the media, Fernando Alonso explained how the gap to Red Bull was the shortest in the Miami GP. He pointed to how he finished 15 seconds behind second-placed Sergio Perez. Though the gap is still massive, Alonso feels that the race in Miami was one of Aston Martin's best of the season so far.
The 41-year-old said:
"Yeah, I think so. I think it was 15 seconds or something like that. So yeah, that probably was our best race of the year in terms of race pace. Yeah, we need to keep understanding the car; obviously, still everything new to us. We found ourselves in a position that we still difficult to believe, but yeah, we are maximizing every Sunday, so this is the way to go."
Fernando Alonso also explained how narrowly he missed a podium finish in Baku but was back in the top three in Miami. He was happy with the strategy, the tire degradation, and the overall performance of the team. Alonso added:
"Yeah, we missed it in Baku for eight-tenths of a second, but here we came back to the podium position. The race was very strong for the team; good strategy, good tire degradation as usual on Sundays, and, yeah, we secured the fourth podium of the season, so it feels great."
Aston Martin is gradually closing the gap to Red Bull, while other top teams are still struggling to fight at the top. Hence, only the green British team has a chance of catching the reigning world champions.
Fernando Alonso on his 'lonely race' in the 2023 F1 Miami GP
Fernando Alonso once again stood on the podium in the 2023 F1 Miami GP after finishing third. However, he explained how it was a bit of a lonely race for him. Since both the Red Bulls were ahead of him, the Spaniard was simply unable to catch them and had no major challenge from any driver from other top teams like Ferrari and Mercedes.
In a post-race media interaction, Fernando Alonso said:
"The car is amazing and it was a bit of a lonely race today. Nothing really to do with the Red Bulls in front of us, and the Ferraris were a little bit worse than expected today. It's never easy but it was a lonely race."
Despite not being involved in a lot of action in the Miami GP, Alonso was delighted with P3 and is enthusiastic about the triple-header in Imola, Monaco and Barcelona.
