Red Bull boss Christian Horner recently blasted Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff for falsely criticizing him. This was regarding Wolff claiming Horner did not sign the joint document from all teams that showed support towards his wife, Susie Wolff, during the FIA's conflict of interest investigation.
In 2023, Toto Wolff's wife, Susie Wolff, was anonymously accused of sharing confidential technical information with her husband. Since she is F1 Academy's director, this was a massive allegation. Though the FIA began their investigation, they soon shut it down after all nine F1 teams planned a joint social media post and signed the agreement that she and her husband were innocent.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Toto Wolff recalled the incident that took place and stated that every team principal stood up for him and his wife, except Red Bull's Christian Horner. He added that the 51-year-old wanted to do his Sky interview and was not willing to sign the document with other teams.
"From Guenther Steiner [the former Haas team principal] to James Vowles [the head of Williams], everybody jumped on to this. They were all ready, but for Christian, to sign a document in our support. As far as I understand it he said: ‘I’m having my own Sky interview and I’m going to say I’m not part of it. I’m not signing the document,’" Wolff said.
In response to Wolff's comments, Christian Horner claimed that he himself received a message from Mercedes honcho thanking him for supporting Susie Wolff. The Red Bull boss was confused as to why the Austrian billionaire was spreading false rumors about him even though he himself got in touch after the FIA stopped the investigation.
"Toto sent me a text message at the end of last year to say thank you for standing up for Susie today and showing them that there is a red line and the teams are together. And I said 'no problem, I said what I believe'. So why he needs to go and say all that s*** this week, I have no idea. I was a little surprised to see his comments because he thanked me for his support. I have not said one word," Horner responded.
During the controversial incident, Red Bull was one of the teams that publicly released a statement on their social media accounts, showing support towards Susie Wolff. In the statement, the team also claimed that they were not the ones who complained to the FIA regarding the conflict of interest.
Toto Wolff's wife hit back at the conflict of interest allegations made against her
After Susie Wolff was accused of sharing confidential technical information with her husband and Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff, she released a statement, hitting back at all the controversy around her. F1 Academy's director wrote that she felt insulted by the manner in which her integrity was questioned.
“I am deeply insulted but sadly unsurprised by the public allegations that have been made this evening. It is disheartening that my integrity is being called into question in such a manner, especially when it seems to be rooted in intimidatory and misogynistic behaviour, and focused on my marital status rather than my abilities,” Susie Wolff wrote.
After all nine teams released a joint statement in support of Susie and Toto Wolff, the FIA decided to stop the investigation and close the case altogether.
