Michael Schumacher's Ferrari 248 is set to go on auction at a whopping $15,000,000. This car was the last Ferrari F1 car that the German legend drove before he left the team and took a sabbatical from the sport.
The iconic machine will be going on RM Sotheby's auction in November. The exorbitant price tag is because the car was Ferrari Classiche Certified in 2008 since the original owner bought it directly from the Italian giants.
In the 2006 F1 season, Michael Schumacher had a fierce title battle with young Fernando Alonso, who was already a reigning world champion from 2005, dethroning Schumacher after 2004. This year, Schumacher was only able to win seven races out of 19 and scored 121 points, while Alonso took his second championship with 134 points.
After the 2006 F1 season, Schumacher announced his retirement from the sport which shook the entire fraternity. However, he remained in Ferrari as an advisor for a few years. In 2010, he made a sensational return to the sport, but this time with Mercedes.
Since Michael Schumacher's Ferrari 248 packs such a massive history, it could soon become one of the highest-auctioned F1 cars in history as well. The car's price tag could be slotted in third place among the highest auctioned F1 cars. The most expensive F1 car that was auctioned was the 1954 Mercedes W196R, sold for more than $25,000,000. The second-most expensive F1 car that was auctioned was the 2013 Mercedes W04, sold for more than $19,000,000.
When Michael Schumacher shared the surprising reason behind his retirement after 2006
Back in 2008, Michael Schumacher shared one of the reasons why he retired from F1 after 2006. The German's departure from the sport shook the motorsport community since he was considered one of the best F1 drivers in history.
In an interview with Swiss Newspaper Blick, Michael Schumacher claimed that he left Ferrari and retired from the sport to keep his friend Felipe Massa employed with the team. He then boldly added that he had no issues against young Kimi Raikkonen as his teammate.
"I stopped because I didn't want my friend Felipe Massa to be unemployed. I would have had no problem going up against Kimi Raikkonen," Schumacher said. (via Crash.net)
Felipe Massa joined Ferrari in 2006. The Brazilian had a mediocre debut season with him winning two races in Turkey and Brazil. Even though he finished P3 in the drivers' standings with 80 points, rumors flew that he could be replaced by Kimi Raikkonen the following year. This was somewhat prevented by Schumacher when he left Ferrari.
