Lewis Hamilton recently had a heartwarming interaction with a young fan before the 2024 F1 British GP. The two talked about whether Hamilton could win the race at Silverstone on July 7.
The seven-time world champion has been struggling in 2024 with Mercedes. After announcing his departure from the team before the season, he and Silver Arrows continued to fix their car design and catch up to the top teams like Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull.
In several races, he was out-qualified by his teammate George Russell, which also triggered controversial rumors about him being disadvantaged in the team. Despite that, both he and the team assured observers that they support each other in every race weekend.
Lewis Hamilton recently took his first podium place finish in 2024 at the Spanish GP, while George Russell won his first race of the season at the Austrian GP. These top finishes have uplifted Mercedes fans massively. Coming into the British GP, it will be a home race for both Hamilton and Russell, as also McLaren's Lando Norris.
During an interview with Sky Sports, a young Mercedes fan asked Hamilton whether the latter would be able to win the race at Silverstone. The 39-year-old beamed, placed a hand on the youngster's head, and said:
"I hope so buddy. With you supporting me, I think it's possible right?" Hamilton said.
He then asked the kid if he thought Hamilton would be able to win the race. The boy said yes with a positive attitude.
The last time Lewis Hamilton won the British GP was in 2021 when he was in an intense title battle with Red Bull's Max Verstappen. In that race, there was a massive collision between the two that sent Verstappen flying from the Copse corner into the barrier. The Dutchman survived the horrific crash, while Hamilton won the race at Silverstone.
Lewis Hamilton hails his home crowd ahead of the 2024 F1 British GP
Lewis Hamilton had nothing but praise for the spectators who arrive to watch the British GP.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he initially mentioned that it was Nigel Mansell who said that the cheers from the stands make a driver a few tenths of a second faster than others. He then hyped the crowd by saying that the fans can help a driver shave off more time per lap with their support.
"Yeah, I feel...was it Nigel Mansell who said it was like couple of tenths? I feel like it's more than that!" Hamilton said.
He then wholeheartedly praised the British GP crowd and crowned them the best in the world.
"I think just for any athlete there is nothing quite like racing and competing in your own territory. I'm so proud to represent so many people here. The crowd that we have at the British GP, no other place comes close to it," he added.
Before the British GP, Lewis Hamilton is placed eighth in the drivers' world championship with 85 points.
