Sergio Perez's recent comments on his Red Bull future did not go well with the fans online. In his recent media interaction, Perez said he had his country and the continent behind him. However, fans slammed him for his comment and asked him to 'move out of Red Bull with grace'.
Perez was subjected to enormous criticism of late after his back-to-back underwhelming performances in the 2024 season. The Mexican driver finished the season in P8 of the Drivers' Championship and was the only driver in the top four teams to not claim a victory, whereas all seven drivers above him claimed multiple victories.
As the 34-year-old failed to make amends, the top brass of Red Bull decided to sack him and reportedly put Liam Lawson in his place for the next season. However, Perez had other ideas. In one of his recent interviews, he said,
"I wouldn't say it's the end. This has become much bigger than a driver, it has a whole country, a whole continent behind me." (As per Autosport.)
This seemingly did not go well with the fans, who justified Red Bull's call on Sergio Perez. Here are some reactions taken from the micro-blogging site, X, formerly Twitter:
"If we are really honest Perez, your country and continent also agree your time is up. You’ve had more than enough chances to show your worth. Bow out gracefully…" a fan wrote.
"Lack of his performance is significant, no need to open "my country supports me" card," another fan wrote.
"It should be the end tbf. Most drivers seemingly get half a season at Red Bull for being a little poor. Perez gets multiple seasons," a user wrote.
"Then they can form a team and you can drive for them, time to go with grace Perez, the team have given you an easy exit, take it,"another added.
"Well it must be the end of his time at the top red bull team. They are too good to not be in contention. Sorry this is the pinnacle of F1," a fan claimed.
"His performance this year was horrible. Endurance racing time for Perez. Or better yet, some off road action. He's good at that,"another fan wrote.
Perez's Driver's Championship gap to his teammate, Max Verstappen, was also massive and shocking. Despite driving for the same team, he was 285 points behind the four-time world champion.
Sergio Perez blamed Red Bull for their Constructors' Championship loss
Sergio Perez seemed to place the blame on Red Bull after the Austrian team failed to compete for the Constructors' championship this season. The Christian Horner-led team was no match for McLaren and Ferrari in the latter stages of the season and lost the chance of contesting the title with a couple of races to go.
While many felt that Perez's failure to match the McLaren, and Ferrari drivers cost Red Bull in the championship in the end, the Mexican thought otherwise. The Guadalajara-born driver believed that Red Bull did not try enough to win the championship. He said (as quoted by RacingNews365):
"Of course, I take responsibility. But also I don’t feel it’s fully all down to one person," Perez said. "I’m obviously part of a big organisation, a big team. And it’s very unfortunate that we did not fight any harder for the Constructors."
Sergio Perez arrived at Red Bull from Racing Point in 2021. He played a big part in helping Verstappen claim his first-ever championship that season by keeping Lewis Hamilton at bay in the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
