The Formula 1 team that finishes eleventh will no longer get part of the prize money from commercial agreements, according to F1 supremo, Bernie Ecclestone. The team that used to finish 11th would usually get $10 million but that amount has now been completely taken away. All the teams, except Marussia, have agreed to these terms set by Bernie and the rest of FIA.
Former FIA president, Max Mosley had set the terms to pay all the teams a part of the commercial revenue but since his retirement and his contract coming to an end, this will no longer be the case.
Bernie Ecclestone was speaking to The Telegraph, “For three years we did something different because we had an agreement with Max but from now on we will pay the top ten and that is it.”
When asked why Marussia hadn’t signed the agreement, he said, “They [Marussia] don’t have a commercial agreement because they are not in the top ten. We pay the top ten, that’s what we do.”
The new agreement now benefits the top teams even more. The fund used to be at $698.5 million (as of 2012) but will now rise significantly from that 50% to a revised 63%.
