Formula 1′s tyre suppliers, Pirelli, have hinted that they might pull out of the sport at the end of the year.
Pirelli’s motorsport director, Paul Hembery, has been on the receiving end of a lot of complaints from many of the teams about the durability of the tyres and how they’ve been unable to push their cars to the maximum. Hembery is finding it hard coping up with the pressure of the sport and believes come end of season, they might withdraw completely.
“Apparently on September 1, we are meant to tell them (the teams) everything that they need to know with the tyres for next season, but now we are in mid-May,” he explained.
“You can imagine how ludicrous that is when we have not got contracts in place. Maybe we won’t be here.“
The Spanish Grand Prix disappointed many because of the record number of pit stops that were made – 79 – which saw Ferrari‘s Fernando Alonso pitting 4 times before clinching the race.
In a press conference in Monaco, Hembery said he’d given an internal date to the team on whether they’d prefer the Italian firm’s continuation next year and beyond, but refused to divulge the date earmarked.
“I have always said we will never declare an internal deadline, but clearly time is already getting too late. Things are getting extremely serious.“
