The weekend at Monaco GP was full of excitement and for Sergio Perez, way more than he could handle. While making a combative effort to get ahead on the tracks, Perez ended up wheel to wheel with his competition, even making contact, in two separate instances, with Fernando Alonso, Kim Raikkonen and his team-mate Jenson Button.
An irate Raikkonen took to the media and claimed in an outright fashion that the McLaren driver did not have an inkling of an idea about what was going on and that he should be hit on the face to sober down his unruly driving.
He is just one in the mob with pitchforks coming at Perez. But he does have the most significant reason as his left rear tyre was punctured in a clash with Perez’s car and consequentially was dropped out of the fifth place.
Perez justified his little ‘accident’ by blaming Raikkonen for not giving him sufficient room.
When asked if the other drivers would talk to Perez, Raikkonen said, “That won’t help. Maybe someone should punch him in the face.”
The 2007 title winner, who usually maintains a calm and composed demeanour, felt offended and lashed out by saying, “It was a really disappointing day. Because of one stupid move from Sergio, we’ve lost a lot of points to Sebastian [Vettel] in the Championship and you can’t afford to lose ground like that.
“He hit me from behind and that’s about all there is to it. If he thinks it’s my fault that he came into the corner too fast then he obviously has no idea what he’s talking about. It’s not the first time he’s hit someone in the race; he seems to expect people to be always looking at what he might do, then move over or go straight on if he comes into the corner too quick and isn’t going to make it without running into someone.”
In a desperate attempt, Raikkone replaced the tires and tried to fight his way back to tenth place by passing the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg on the last lap.
But even then, he slipped 21 points behind Drivers’ Championship leader Vettel.
