Sauber F1 driver Sergio Perez has accused Williams F1 driver Pastor Maldonaldo of dangerous driving and has demanded the FIA to take action in this regard. Perez, who was shunted harshly by Maldonaldo during the British Grand Prix leading to a premature end to his race, was flabbergasted about the incident and used strong words in his interview soon after the incident.
“Pastor is a driver who doesn’t respect other drivers. It’s just a matter of fact. I was already in front, and if not he should have given me enough space not to crash, but he tried to push me all the way to the outside. I don’t understand the way he is driving. I really hope the stewards can make something because the last three or four races he has done something to [other drivers]“
This is the second time that Perez and Maldonaldo are being involved in a collision. During a practice session at Monaco, Maldonaldo crashed into Perez and ended up getting a 10-place grid penalty for the race. Perez also quoted Maldonaldo’s crash with Lewis Hamilton at the fag end of the European Grand Prix race.
“It is not the first time he has damaged my weekend. He did the same [to Hamilton] in Valencia, and they gave him a drive-through, which I think is not enough. This guy will never learn if they don’t do something, because he is a very dangerous driver and he can hurt someone.”
When asked if other drivers had spoken about Maldonaldo, Perez agreed and said that Maldonaldo needed to be taught a lesson in respecting fellow drivers.
“Everybody has concerns about him. He is a driver who doesn’t know we are risking our lives and has no respect at all. It is not a matter of close or not. He has no respect at all. The way he is driving I think the stewards really have to do something because it is not the first time he has done something. He affects a lot of drivers; I am not the only one.””
Interestingly, the governing body of F1 – FIA had instructed the drivers not to defend their position harshly following the Valencia racing incident between Hamilton and Maldonaldo. With Sergio Perez venting his frustration about Maldonaldo’s driving, the FIA is in a tight spot right now. Also, with the FIA’s utmost concern being driver safety, one shouldn’t be surprised if Maldonaldo is reprimanded in a tough manner for his recent antics on the race track.
