Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera has answered Fernando Alonso’s criticism of the tyres by saying that the Spaniard was not able to win because of many other reasons.
Earlier Alonso, who is one of the most influential drivers on the grid, questioned the quality of the tyres in-between ongoing negotiations of the company for a new contract.
“I have to say that he was very nervous when he said that. It was not because of tyres — he wasn’t able to win for a number of reasons. If they (Ferrari) didn’t use the tyres properly, it’s not our fault,” Tronchetti Provera told CNN.
The 65-year-old added that the teams should strictly follow the operating guidelines as the tyres are designed in such a way that they wear out quickly.
“We can do whatever is needed, but with the respect of the rules. It means tyres have to be used within the limits we provide teams. We had some damages for a few weeks after Silverstone. But I think today people understand it wasn’t Pirelli’s fault,” he said.
