Pirelli are finally set to bring in different tyres, tyres that have been worked upon, to give drivers more of an opportunity to exploit their cars to the maximum.
Fernando Alonso, winner of the Spanish Grand Prix, pitted four times en route to his victory. All in all, there were 79 pit stops on Sunday across 22 drivers. Teams have been complaining about the low life of the Pirellis and how they’re unable to actually push their cars.
Bernie Ecclestone, F1 supremo too was unhappy, saying, “The tyres are wrong, not what we intended when we asked Pirelli to produce something which did half a race.“
Motorsport director for Pirelli, Paul Hembery, squashed rumours that Bernie forced the changes, by saying, “He was only sharing the comments of the majority, that we had gone a step too far and we needed to come back a bit.”
“So I wouldn’t say it was pressure from him, it was really from the fans from a sporting point of view.”
“From what we saw on Sunday, we felt, no, this was going in the wrong direction.“
Having experienced more pitstops than usual, Paul continued, “We want to go back to having two or three-stop races.“
Compared to last year, the cars are much faster almost by a second. Pirelli seemed to indicate they didn’t expect this.
“They have basically been stressing everything too much, and probably we underestimated the performance.“
Pirelli are now due to change the tyres from Canada onward. Earlier in the year, they had announced the two softest sets of tyres for the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. They will, however, announce new options soon.
