After dominating Formula 1 in the past few years, Red Bull have entered the lucrative Hypercar segment with its first-ever car, the RB17. The Adrian Newey-designed car was revealed at the ongoing Goodwood Festival of Speed.
After collaborating with Aston Martin for their Valkyrie, Red Bull decided to enter the high-performance Hypercar segment. The automotive division of the Austrian Formula 1 outfit announced the RB17 project in 2022.
After spending two years on the design and development of their first road-legal car, Red Bull have taken the wraps off the RB17 at the legendary Goodwood FOS. Here's everything you need to know about the Red Bull RB17:
#1 The entire chassis is made using carbon fiber
Much like a Formula 1 race car, the entire chassis of the all-new RB17 Hypercar is made using high-quality carbon fiber. That allowed Red Bull to keep the weight of the car as low as 900 kg (approximately 1,984 lb).
Despite the low weight, the car doesn't compromise on structural rigidity. The car even uses the engine as a stressed member of the chassis, to make it more stable.
#2 It features active as well as passive aerodynamic elements to maximize performance and aero efficiency
With a top speed of over 350 kmph (217 mph), the RB17 generates a maximum downforce of about 3,747 lb, nearly double its weight.
That allows the car to stay planted on the straights. However, to make it nimble around the corners, Adrian Newey has designed several active as well as passive aerodynamic elements, like the front and rear wings and a large diffuser.
They ensure that the car would deliver maximum performance in all scenarios without compromising on aero efficiency.
#3 The Hypercar draws power from a Cosworth-sourced 4.5-liter, naturally aspirated V10 engine that makes 1,200hp
Powering the all-new Red Bull RB17 is a Cosworth-sourced 4.5-liter, naturally aspirated V10 mill, which develops close to 1,000hp on its own. The engine is mated to a specially designed carbon fiber six-speed sequential gearbox with an integrated electric motor that generates around 200hp.
Combined, the drivetrain puts out a maximum power of 1,200hp. The V10 engine revs up to 15,000 rpm.
#4 It has no reverse gear
Unlike several other supercars and hypercars, the RB17 doesn't feature a reverse gear.
The 'backing up' duties on the high-performance vehicle are taken care of by the integrated electric motor. This move is likely done to reduce weight and increase gearbox reliability.
#5 Red Bull will offer a one-of-a-kind experience to RB17 owners
To make the ownership experience unique, Red Bull will offer a one-of-a-kind program for RB17 owners.
The Austrian team will host several track day events to make sure that owners experience the hypercar to its full potential. Moreover, Red Bull will also design the car to suit individual driver's needs, with custom-made seats and an adjustable pedal box.
#6 Only 50 units of the Red Bull RB17 will be made
Red Bull Advanced Technologies will only be producing 50 units of the RB17 hypercar worldwide.
It carries a hefty price tag of over $6,000,000 in the U.S. However, all units of the track-focused hypercar have already been called for, as reported by Motor1.com.
