Pérez started karting at six and continued progressing through various categories, including British Formula 3 and the GP2 Series, before moving into Formula One with Sauber in 2011. He has driven for McLaren, Force India, and Racing Point.

In 2020, he achieved his first Formula One win at the Sakhir Grand Prix. Perez has since won multiple races for Red Bull Racing since joining the team in 2021. By December 2024, Perez had scored 152 points and was in eighth position in the Drivers Championship. His season features four podium finishes, including a season's best second at Saudi Arabia. Perez recently announced his departure from Red Bull.
