Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position for the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix, with his fastest lap in Q3 over half a second quicker than Pastor Maldonado’s. Hamilton’s team mate Jenson Button lines up on the second row of the grid in P4.
Maldanado surprised everyone with a very quick lap in Q3, and will be starting from P2 on the grid. His team mate Bruno Senna however didn’t make into the last stage of qualifying after crashing his Williams in Q2.
Sebastian Vettel surprisingly couldn’t keep with his practice form and could only manage third position on the grid. Mark Webber also failed to deliver and will line up P7 on the grid.
World Championship leader Fernando Alonso got the maximum out of the Ferrari, and will line up in fifth on the grid alongside Force India’s Paul Di Resta, who did a brilliant job to claim the sixth fastest time. Di Resta’s teammate Nico Hulkenberg failed to get into Q3 and will line up in P11 on the grid.
Romain Grosjean did a brilliant job to get into Q3 after his initial spin in Q2, but was probably a bit too aggressive on his flying lap in Q3, and so lines up in eighth on the grid. Kimi Raikkonen couldn’t make into Q3, which is a big surprise, with the Finn lining up in 12th on the grid.
The Mercedes duo of Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg will start in ninth and tenth on the grid. Both the Mercedes drivers didn’t set a time in Q3 and will start on the harder compound tyres.
Felipe Massa as usual couldn’t match Fernando Alonso’s pace and failed to make it into Q3, lining up in 13th on the grid.
The Saubers had a terrible day with Sergio Perez in 14th place and Kamui Kobayashi in 18th place. Behind Sergio Perez were the usual suspects, with the Toro Rosso duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne lining up in 15th and 16th places respectively.
Vitaly Petrov managed to outqualify Heikki Kovalinen, while at HRT, Narain Karthikeyan outqualified Pedro De la Rosa for second consecutive time this season.
