Triple Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel (right) and ex-Formula 1 driver turned commentator David Coulthard (left) and Krasnodar deputy governor Mikhail Buturlakin pose with a map of Russian Grand Prix circuit in Sochi on April 22, 2013. Vettel said he was impressed with the track currently under construction in Sochi.

Germany’s three-time Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel said Monday he was impressed with the Formula One racing track currently under construction in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

The venue is due to figure on the 2014 Formula One calendar with construction on the 5,872-metre track expected to be completed in July of that same year.

“I like the place that was chosen for the construction of the racing track very much,” Vettel told reporters after he inspected the site alongside former F1 star David Coulthard.

“Of course you need to drive along the track to understand all of its details but according to the plans it will be an interesting and complex track.”

Vettel, who won the Bahrain Grand Prix stage at the weekend, added that he was impatient for the opportunity to test the circuit in the city that is set to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

“The circuit was laid between the Olympic venues. The curves here will be really acute. The Sochi track will be really unique,” he said.

Nikolai Buturlakin, the deputy governor of Krasnodar region said organisers expect 100,000 fans to attend the inaugural Sochi Grand Prix.
