Student Engineers compete in Formula Bharat at Kari Motor Speedway, Coimbatore

More than 2000 students from engineering colleges across India showcased their engineering skills at the Kari Motor Speedway, Coimbatore between January 23rd until January 27th, 2019.

Formula Bharat is a competition which is a part of the global Formula Student series which takes place in 13 countries around the world. This year, the competition had two separate categories for combustion and electric category cars.

The combustion category had 65 competing teams while the electric category consisted of 15.

“This was the third edition of Formula Bharat and we had 88 teams registered for the competition which is the highest we have ever had. We also had the electric category for the first time this year which made the competition more exciting and gave us a glimpse of what the future beholds,” said Cathy D’Souza, Event Manager of Formula Bharat.

The teams competed in static events which included design, cost and business plan presentation.

The competition concluded with on track dynamic events acceleration, skidpad, autocross, endurance and fuel efficiency that took place on Saturday and Sunday. The static events were judged by professionals from the Automotive and Motorsports industry.

Before being permitted to compete in the on-track dynamic events, the had to undergo strict scrutineering procedures to ensure that the cars complied to a set of safety standards and rules.

The dynamic events tested the skills of the drivers as well as the performance of the student-built race cars. Formula Manipal from Manipal Academy of Higher Education won the acceleration event at the competition as their car was able to cover 100 meters in 4.28 secs.

The overall winner of the Combustion category was GTU Motorsports from Gujarat Technological University and the overall winner of the Electric category was Team Kratos Racing from Pimpri Chinchwad College Of Engineering, Pune.
