Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton set a new unprecedented record in F1 by winning the joint most championships (seven) in the sport's history. However, former technical director Ross Brawn, who worked with both the legends, has rated Michael higher compared to Lewis.
Brawn and Schumacher won seven world championships together in separate stints with Benetton and Ferrari. Their partnership with the Italian team, especially, turned out to be historic as Schumacher won five back-to-back titles.
However, from 2010-13, Brawn also served with Mercedes as team principal, where he had an opportunity to work with Hamilton before the Briton went on to match Schumacher's record.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Auto Hebdo, Brawn drew comparisons between Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, rating the former higher compared to the latter. As quoted by Planet F1, he said:
"Not more than once in a decade. I’ve worked with Lewis, who is another incredibly fast and talented driver, but with a totally different approach. He’s got the kind of notoriety you want, the kind of lifestyle you want on the fast lane, which is the opposite of the tranquillity Michael was looking for."
However, despite their similar talent, Brawn vouched for Schumacher's legacy.
“But deep down, there was the same commitment, talent, and desire. Just the approach was different. As far as I’m concerned, helping him win each of his seven world titles was just exceptional. There is nothing above Michael," he added.
Schumacher's and Hamilton's stats are remotely similar. The British driver has more wins (103) compared to the German, and he also eclipsed the former legend's dominant era. With Mercedes, Hamilton won six world championships to match the 56-year-old's all-time high record.
Nonetheless, both Schumacher and Hamilton have left a distinct impact on the sport. Their eras of dominance will be remembered in F1 for ages to come.
Ralf Schumacher weighs in on Lewis Hamilton emulating Michael Schumacher's legacy with Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton followed in Michael Schumacher's footsteps to join Scuderia Ferrari for the 2025 F1 season. Ahead of his highly anticipated move, Ralf Schumacher drew stark differences between his brother and the 39-year-old British driver. Speaking to Sport1.de, he said:
"The biggest difference is that Michael, among many other qualities, was able to work with the engineers to develop a car that suited his driving style perfectly. Lewis can't. He has never been able to do that."
The former F1 legend won five consecutive titles with Ferrari to script an extraordinary legacy. However, Hamilton has had equal success with Mercedes to unleash an era of dominance of his own.
Meanwhile, the Ferrari switch is expected to be a big challenge for Lewis Hamilton as he is stepping into a new team at the age of 39.
