The first ever Russian Grand Prix in the championship era failed to live up to expectations with the Sochi Autodrom providing little on-track action for the 55,000 fans present at the circuit and the millions of people watching it from their television sets. The outcome of the race was decided on the second turn when Nico Rosberg flat spotted his tyres, necessitating an early stop. Rosberg put on a superb recovery to finish in second place and limit the damage to race winner and F1 championship rival Lewis Hamilton. With the 1-2 result, Mercedes celebrated their first ever constructors title.
