Nico Rosberg took pole position for the season closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton qualifying just behind in second place after two untidy flying laps in Q3. Hamilton had the upper hand over his teammate in the first two legs of qualifying, but when it mattered the most, he tumbled under pressure. Rosberg would need Hamilton to finish in third place or lower, with him taking the top spot of the podium, if he is to take the drivers crown. Hamilton, meanwhile, can afford to consolidate his starting position of second but given his style, he would prefer to take the title with victory at the twilight race.
