In the wake of the news of Mercedes‘ Pirelli tyre test being made public ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, the FIA announced that it is being contemplated whether the issue has to be taken to the international tribunal or not.
According to the sport’s governing body, the tribunal may decide to impose penalties that would supersede any penalty the stewards of the meeting may have issued.
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has expressed that he believes the current controversy is very similar to the ‘Ferrari data’ scandal in 2007, which resulted in McLaren being stripped of their entire Constructors’ Championship points. “There will be a hearing,” Marko told Bild, “although I do not know when and where. It is in the direction of the ‘spygate’ scandal of 2007 between McLaren and Ferrari.”
Both Pirelli and Mercedes are choosing to keep a closed lip ever since FIA’s statement went public.
