Sebastian Vettel has criticized Pirelly’s resistance against introducing a new rear tyre structures at the Canadian Grand Prix, arguing it should have been changed on safety grounds.
The tyre manufacturer claimed that they intended to switch the belt material of its tyres from steel to Kevlar at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix following complaints of delamination, but decided to delay the switch until the British GP after facing opposition from other teams.
Nevertheless, the teams will have the opportunity to test out the new tyres during Friday practice in Canada.
Vettel still feels that the tyres should have been changed earlier and said that those opposing the change should be prepared to take responsibility for any accidents that might happen this weekend because of delaminations.
“We learned that we will not use different tyres for here, only for Friday testing. On safety grounds we had concerns, but some people took the responsibility for this weekend that it will be fine. What exactly is the plan [going forward], I don’t know.”
While Vettel believes that the large parts of tread flying off cars is intrinsically dangerous, the opponents using the new tyres have waived off the use of the Kevlar belt as the steel-belted tyre stays inflated when the delamination occurs, preventing a blow out.
