Last year during the season it was seen that Sebastian Vettel had something mysterious behind his steering wheel which his then-teammate Kimi Raikkonen didn't have.
Later it was revealed to be some kind of a paddle. No one knew what it was or what did it did. Every journalist and expert gave their opinions on it. Even the fans became an expert too on this one.
Finally, now the truth has been revealed. The third paddle on the steering wheel has been revealed as some type of a Hand Brake. Yes! A hand break it is. According to an Italian media Expert Giorgio Piola, when he was asked about this third paddle gave a bit of an unusual answer, told about its functionality.
He told that it is a handbrake. Obviously, not controlling the actual brakes which would be illegal according to the rules and not something that makes it easier to pull off a handbrake in the paddocks because that would be silly instead it had something to do with controlling the engine breaking. How smart!
Presumably, in some way, it affected the engine power and manually controlled the engine braking. It could be through the way that how a hybrid system harvests the power or an internal combustion engine is running.
Now, why did his then-teammate Kimi Raikkonen never had it on the back of his steering wheel? Apparently, because he never wanted to have one! We all know how Kimi is. He has been one of the most entertaining and straightforward drivers to ever step in the formula one.
Now did it ever created any difference? I guess no! Because if it did then most probably Mercedes or any other team would have yelled about it! Every driver will have their own version for it. Some may think yes and some may think no. But one thing is for sure that at least for Kimi Raikkonen, it never made any difference. Ferrari might never clarify anything about it but this is one of the most logical explanations that has come forth.
