Italian driver Alex Zanardi suffered a potentially life-ending accident at the Lausitz race in the year 2001, which was part of the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) calendar. He lost three quarters of his blood as his legs disintegrated after the collision with Patrick Carpentier.
